Who is Tomato Pincushion?

Megan Thibodeau is an illustrator and quilter from Portland, ME.

Megan received a BFA in Illustration from Massachusetts College of Art and Design where they began exploring how to combine their illustration practice with their life-long passion of quilting and fiber arts. Inspired by traditional quilting motifs, animals, and domestic life, Megan specializes in rich gouache paintings & vivid digital illustrations which they print onto fabric and use the lines of their illustrations as a guide to sew the fabric into a whole-cloth quilt. Megan’s work was featured in the 2025 Society of Illustrators Student Competition.

FAQs

  • To quilt simply means to sew three layers of fabric together! Whole-cloth quilts require no piecing to create the top quilt. Instead, my illustrations are printed directly onto one piece of cotton fabric and sewn together with batting and backing fabrics using the lines of my illustration to guide my stitching. This process allows me to maintain the integrity of my illustrations without losing any details!
